Discovering new areas – Surfcasting
Pike fishing is fun but from my point of view its saltwater colleagues like cod and flatfish taste much better.
I easily get seasick and therefore I have been searching for other possibilities to get tasty fish. As a result I went to a tackle shop and bought special equipment for surfcasting – a rod, a reel, line, leaders and weights.
Björn was a little bit skeptical about this way of fishing and so I had to go and learn on my own.
Friends of mine rent out beach chairs on the island „Fehmarn“ and one weekend in September I helped them. Because of autumnally weather there were almost no activities at the beach and I could prepare my fishing equipment.
Beside bringing the new surfcasting equipment I also brought my usual spin fishing rod to try it. As a bait I was using rockworms. At the very beginning it was not easy for me to find out the right casting technique as well as finding the right spots considering waves, streams, stones and weights on the leader. And of course everybody has his own technique to put the rockworms on the hooks.
Additionally picking the right leader and choosing between green, yellow or orange floating balls with or without spots made my crazy. I had to learn a lot and therefore I did not think of catching many fish.
Nevertheless this day was differently… here comes the result:
– A stiff neck from staring at the tip of my rods,
– One crawfish,
– Two baby flatfish (plaice) of about 15cm and
– One big flatfish (plaice) of 43cm.
Honestly I caught all flatfish on my old spinning rod except for the crawfish so why do I need special equipment for surfcasting?
By the way the big plaice was very tasty even though it did not fit in my pan! 😉
